L’origine du nom “Novell” provient d’une mauvaise orthographe du mot français “Nouvelle”. En tout cas, c’est ce que dit ce site:

“According to Roger White, an early Novell employee, the two founders of Novell Data Systems were at their lawyer’s office preparing to incorporate. Jack Davis planned to use the name Macro Systems, when George Canova said his wife had a great name for the company: Novell. Jack asked, “What does it mean?” Davis said that it meant “new” in French. Considering that the French word for “new” is the masculine “nouveau” or the feminine “nouvelle,” it appears that Novell’s current name is the result of a misspelling.”

Ce qui donne à peu près en français (traduction libre):

“D’après Roger White, employé de la première heure chez Novell, les deux fondateurs de ‘Novell Data Systems’ préparaient leur création d’entreprise chez leur avocat. Jack Davis avait prévu de lui donner comme nom ‘Macro Systems’ [ha ha ha], quand George Canova lui dit que sa femme avait trouvé un excellent nom pour la société: ‘Novell’. “Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire?” lui demanda Jack. [George] répondit que cela signifiait ‘new’ en français. Sachant que ‘new’ se traduit par ‘nouveau’ au masculin ou ‘nouvelle’ au féminin, il s’avère que le nom ‘Novell’ retenu pour la société est le résultat d’une faute d’orthographe.”
